Crockett’s CPS butter cookies featured in Chicago Tribune

Rich, buttery and just 5 cents each, Chicago Public Schools’ iconic butter cookies made lunchtime all the merrier from the 1960s and through the ’80s. These classic shortbread cookies, pressed with three fingers for good measure and baked to toasty perfection, once graced cafeteria trays across the city.

Cheryl Crockett was working in the corporate world when a college friend shared her recipe for the cafeteria classic. “I adapted the recipe, hoping to re-create the happy school-day memories these cookies inspired, and brought some to a family get-together. From that day forward, I couldn’t attend a family gathering without a batch of my cookies.”

I purchased some at Walgreens in Elgin and they were delicious. I’m from Chicago and I crave for the lunch room cookies often. I’m sooo happy that you have this company to keep memories ALIVE!!!!!

My wife was in Chicago and bought me these cookies as a surprise. I love them and because of the great taste and your name, I plan on giving many of them away as Christmas presents (here in St. Louis).

So glad to be able to buy your cookies in Plainfield, IL. You know I could really make my own but these taste so much better and remind me of my CPS days back in the 80s. I prefer to support black women owned businesses.

What if my grandson has a severe peanut allergy. Are the butter cookies safe for him to eat?

I purchased two containers of your butter cookies from Walgreens on 10/22/18 from your batch dated 12/24/18. There was something off about the taste ! Those were definitely missing something ! That batch did not taste like your lunchroom butter cookies. I wish I had kept the receipt,I would have taken them back to the store !

      Hi Theresa,
I am sorry to hear that. We did have a slight tweak in our recipe and it has been adjusted. Send your address here for a refund for the 2 containers. Thank you!!
